What is the exam pattern for the GATE 2019?

GATE Exam Pattern 2019 – IIT Madras (the exam conducting body) has announced the exam pattern of GATE 2019 with the release of official notification in the month of July 6, 2018.

GATE Exam Pattern 2019 is comprised with complete information related to the online test which will be conducted on February 2, 3, 9 & 10, 2019.

This time GATE exam will be conducted for 24 papers (Statistics Paper Added in GATE 2019). The examination will be 3 hours long in duration and will consist of both numerical answer type questions and multiple choice questions.

Each GATE paper will also consist of General Aptitude questions which is mandatory to solve and have to be attempted.

The candidates will be given subject-specific questions according to the preference of the candidates. The examination will be of total 100 marks.

GATE pattern help the candidates to know how the test will be conducted so that they can prepare for the exam accordingly.

Types of Questions in GATE

Questions in GATE Exam are broadly divided into MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions) and NAT (Numerical Answer Type).

  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)

In MCQs, candidates are provide with 4 choices on a single question in which only one answer is correct. A candidate has to tick out the correct answer by clicking on the radio button against the option. Multiple choice questions carries one or two marks each.

  • Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions

NAT comprises with a set of questions will carry one or two marks each. It includes questions which have to be answered in the real numbers and the answer has to be entered using the mouse by the candidates. Numerical Answer Type Questions will be mentioned up to decimal places and the candidates need to make the correct answer.

  • Questions Based on General Aptitude

Besides the questions asked from GATE subjects, the paper will also include the questions in order to test the skill of candidate's General Ability like – Analytical Skills and Language. The General Aptitude section contains 15% weightage of total marks in all the papers.

The distribution of the questions and marks is as follows:

  • 5 question contains 5 marks (1 mark is allotted for each question)
  • 5 questions contains 10 marks (2 mark is allotted for each question)

The pattern of questions in GATE 2019 exam are explained below:

Recall: This section includes questions based on law of disciplines, principles, facts and formulae. The candidate has to mark an answer either from one line computation or directly from a memory.

Application: This section comprises with logical reasoning based questions where the candidates have to answer according to their skills through computation.

Comprehension: These types of question test the ability of candidate's basic understanding of the subject. In this part, the candidate have to make a simple assumptions from basic idea in these types of questions.

Analysis and Synthesis: In this section, the type of questions presented with some images, diagrams, data etc. that are basically require analysis before a question can be answered. A Synthesis question might necessitate the candidate to associate two or more bits of information. Questions presented in this category could involve candidates in recognizing unspecified assumptions or separating useful information from irrelevant information.
